The Out-of-Hours Service

Derbyshire Health United provides GP services out of hours. To contact the out-of-hours service, phone your normal GP telephone number and your call will either be re-directed or another number given for the out-of-hours service.

When is the out-of-hours service available?

The GP out-of-hours service is available whenever your GP surgery is closed.  This means Monday to Friday, 18:30 to 8:00 and 24 hours a day on Saturdays, Sunday and bank holidays.

When should I call this service rather than 999 or NHS Direct?

If you require emergency treatment for a potentially life-threatening condition you should dial 999 and ask for the ambulance service.  The following conditions are considered potentially life-threatening:

  • chest pain
  • loss of consciousness
  • breathing difficulties
  • severe loss of blood.

For any other condition which you feel cannot wait until your GP surgery opens, you should contact the out-of-hours service.

If you only require health information, you should contact NHS Direct or go to www.nhs.uk.

Your local pharmacy will also be able to give you advice and offer a range of over-the-counter medications.
